Location Map – WLAN Access Points

The campus area has had comprehensive wireless network coverage since mid 2002. This applies to lecture halls, seminar rooms and isolated office rooms.

Outside of the campus area, the Domus and the Schönbornerhof am Schillerplatz have comprehensive wireless network coverage.

You may start wireless connections in any of the areas marked in green in the map below:

WLAN – Further Information

The Data Center operates two campus-wide wireless LANs in accordance with the 802.11a/b/g/n standard: one with the network name (SSID) Uni-Mainz and one with the network name eduroam. Both are encrypted and provide increased security. Beside these two, there is also the 'Winulum', which is un-encrypted and therefore not recommended for working or surfing.

Further information about the WLAN networks mentioned may be found here:

Prerequisites for use:

  • A JGU account or a JGU account at a college or other instituiton that participates in the eduroam network (for eduroam)
  • A wireless-enabled notebook/netbook or other mobile device.

Students and staff of the university of Mainz usually connect to the network eduroam.

Please note the following:

  • If you are using Windows (10 or an older version), we recommend using the firewall integrated in the operating system. We advise against installing additional firewall software.
  • That no public DNS servers such as 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 are fixed in the network properties. The DNS server assignment must be configured to "Automatic (DHCP)".

The wireless network called eduroam can also be used by guests from other universities whose home university is part of the eduroam network.
We have described how the connection is set up for various operating systems: Notes on the left in the navigation bar under eduroam.

Problems with the network connection?

If you have problems accessing the wireless network, you can find help in the W-LAN consultation hours at the advice center .

You can find instructions on how to solve the WiFi error "Unable to connect to this network" in Windows here.

Bandwidth

There are currently two different types of access points in use:

Type Bandwidth nominal Bandwidth real

802.11a/b/g 54 Mbps 20 Mbps

802.11n 300 Mbps 120 Mbps

A gross bandwidth of 54 Mbit/s is nominally available for 802.11g. Transmission rates of around 20 MBit/s can be achieved. However, they depend on the distance between the station and the access point and the number of stations operated at the same time.

Access Points

In the publicly accessible buildings (libraries, corridors, seminar rooms, lecture halls, etc.), as well as outdoors on the university campus and in Germersheim, there are almost 500 Access Points for wireless LAN access to the campus network.

Number of stations that can be operated simultaneously

An access point can theoretically serve any number of stations. Since the stations share the bandwidth (shared medium), the theoretical transmission speed of 54 Mbit/s at one station drops accordingly.

Cost of internet access

The ZDV does not charge wireless LAN users for its use.

Network access

Access to the network is via dynamic DHCP via a dedicated web server. The computers must be configured appropriately for this.

Electrosmog

Very low power, ten times less than a mobile phone, approx. 100 milliwatts (mobile phone = 1 watt)

eduroam for iPod, iPhone

Remove Winulum

If you wish to use an Applie iPod with eduroam you will have to delete any existing Winulum connection, because otherwise an eduroam connection cannot be established.

Below Einstellungen, Wi-Fi-Netzwerke, press the arrow to the right of winulum, then press Dieses Netzwerk ignorieren and confirm this again.

Configuring eduroam

Then press the Home button on your iPod/iPhone, and the button Einstellungen:

Press Wi-Fi (must not be connected), then choose the network eduroam:

You will be asked for your user name and password. Please enter your user name (JGU account name), followed by @uni-mainz.de and the corresponding password. After that press Verbinden in the lower right.

Make sure you enter your real user name - not, for example, your mail alias, which is different!

The wireless network eduroam is also offered at other universities. If you wish to use eduroam at other universities, when entering your JGU account data you will have to add @uni-mainz.de to your JGU account name (even though it looks similar: this is not your e-mail address). Without that addition, at another university you would be regarded as a local user - and because presumably no user with your combination of user name and password exists there, a connection would then be refused.

Using the certificate

We will now show you the certificate data. Check the certificate below Mehr Details.

The right certificate is issued for the server radius.zdv.uni-mainz.de and it contains the following information for verification purposes. some of which will be displayed here:

CN = radius.zdv.uni-mainz.de
O = Johannes Gutenberg-Universitaet Mainz
L = Mainz
S = Rheinland-Pfalz
C = DE

finger print: ae bc 5d d0 ee 25 02 d1 14 e5 8e 77 45 a4 64 b7 37 73 b9 69

If a certificate with this information is displayed, click on Annehmen. Now wait until a connection has been established. The next thing on display will be an overview of the Wi-Fi networks. Done.

Winulum

"WIreless Netzwerk zur Unterstützung der Lehre an der Universität Mainz"<
The Data Center operates an un-encrypted Wireless Local Area Network. Please note: un-encrypted means that your data transactions can be read by anyone). To use it, all you need to do is to authenticate via a webpage: login.uni-mainz.de. Please also see our documentation about → network access.

Please note: if you are using Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7 we recommend using the firewall that comes with the operating system. For these systems we would advise against installing an additional firewall software.

If your operating system and your hardware support security enabled (encrypted) wireless LANs (almost all newer devices support encryption), then we recommend using one of these other SSIDs: → uni-mainz or → eduroam.

eduroam for Windows 8

Establishing the connection

Look for the network eduroam under Einstellungen → Netzwerke. Then click Verbinden.

Enter your user name (JGU account) in the form username@uni-mainz.de and your password. Then click OK.

In front of the @ symbol please enter your real user name, not, for example, your mail alias, which is different!

The following notification will then appear:

For displaying the details of the certificate click on Zertifikatsdetails anzeigen.
Something like the following will then appear:

From 9 July 2019, 18.00, you will find the following finger print in the details of the certificate:

Then click on: Verbinden.

In case this doesn't work ...

... and you receive the note 'Verbindung zum Netzwerk kann nicht hergestellt werden': this probably means that the necessary certicate is not installed on your device. To solve this problem, you may use another network (winulum, for example) and then open a https URL like OWA (→ https://mail.uni-mainz.de) or JoguStINe (→ https://jogustine.uni-mainz.de) with Internet-Explorer (not Chrome, Opera, Firefox or another browser, because it won't work there).
If you open that URL in Internet Explorer, the necessary certificate should be automatically installed and will then be availabe for wireless connections like eduroam and uni-mainz.

eduroam – Wireless LAN via associated University network

The University of Mainz takes part in the → eduroam network, in which universities have joined forces in Europe (in the meantime even worldwide).

Under the network name (SSID) eduroam, the center operates campus-wide data processing for an encrypted wireless LAN. WPA/WPA2 Enterprise with TKIP and AES encryption serve as security mechanisms. The coverage is consistent with the coverage for the wireless LAN uni-mainz (with the exception of the University Clinic areas).Members of other universities participating in the European eduroam network can connect to the eduroam wireless LAN via the University of Mainz, by logging in with the JGU account of their home university.
Conversely, members of the University of Mainz who are at other universities in the eduroam network may use eduroam with the Mainz JGU account.

Instructions for setting up eduroam with various operating systems can be found below and in the navigation bar.

When using the following instructions for configuring eduroam on various operating systems plese note:

Usually it should not be necessary to download a certificate any more. The certificate we use is already available on most devices.

Users who have already used eduroam with an older configuration (using the orca certificate that had to be separately installed) will have to delete their existing eduroam connection first and may then re-configure it.

Wireless Network "Uni-Mainz"

The Data Center operates two campus-wide wireless LANs in accordance with the 802.11a/b/g/n standard: one with the network name (SSID) Uni-Mainz and one with the network name eduroam. Both are encrypted and provide increased security.

Connecting to the wireless network Uni-Mainz is usually not complicated. The following description shows how to configure it with Windows 7.

For other operating systems please use → the instructions for eduroam. The only difference is the use of Uni-Mainz as the name of the network (SSID), as seen here.

Please click on the network symbol in the task bar at the bottom right.This will show all available wireless networks. Please click on Uni-Mainz, then Verbinden.

You will now be asked for the user name and password of your JGU account.

Once you have entered those data and clicked OK, then, if this is the first configuration of this connection, you will see a security notification. Please click on: Details.

The right certificate is issued for the server radius.zdv.uni-mainz.de and it contains the following information for verification purposes. Depending on your device and operating system, you will only be shown part of this information:

CN = radius.zdv.uni-mainz.de
O = Johannes Gutenberg-Universitaet Mainz
L = Mainz
S = Rheinland-Pfalz
C = DE

Finger print: ‎
f5 d1 96 43 8e 60 78 f6 c1 0f ec 4c 5d 03 6b 30 f6 07 5a f1

Finger print form 9 July 2019, 18.00:
‎‎e7 78 56 db b8 2c 23 cf f1 26 94 48 42 f4 cd 54 b3 5b 6b 7d

If the data shown conforms with the data shown here, you may accept the certificate.

If you then click Verbinden the connection will be established (and the server radius.zdv.uni-mainz.de will be set as 'trustworthy').
