The acronym iRODS stands for “integrated Rule-Oriented Data System”. It is an open source data management software solution. The ZDV operates an iRODS server for the long-term archiving of research data and provides the technical basis for research data management at JGU. Further information can be found on the pages of the Research Data Competence Team.
JGU researchers can store data from completed projects on the iRODS server, add metadata and, if required, make it publicly accessible. A copy of the data is stored on hard disks for quick access and a copy on tape is stored separately.
Access
Access to iRODS is currently only possible via Linux. Authentication takes place via Kerberos, which has already been done on the systems managed by the ZDV.
The iRODS client is installed on the Linux servers of the ZDV and on the login nodes of Mogon. For the Debian provided by the ZDV, the following two packages must be installed:
* `irods-icommands`
Detailed documentation can be found on the Archiving Research Data page and in the Mogon Wiki.
Experimental Web Access
Experimental access to archiving is also possible via the web browser, although some restrictions must be observed here:
1. The listed web access can change at any time, as it is not stable. Use of the web interface is at your own risk!
2. Only one file can be uploaded at a time.
3. Files must not be larger than ~5GB.
Access is possible via iRODS-web. The project directory can be found under the following link:

ZDV Independent Systems
Please note that the ZDV only supports the centrally managed Debian systems. Linux servers operated independently of the ZDV cannot be supported.
