Software OnlyOffice will be switched to the Open-Source-Version

On May 29th ("Pfingstmontag") the ZDV will switch from OnlyOffice to the free Open-Source-Version. On the day of the switch you will not have to do anything. However it can happen briefly that OnlyOffice will not be available.

OnlyOffice is needed for joint edititng of files in Seafile. You will recognise the Software by the logo in the top left corner of the applications: Texts (blue), Calculations (green) and Presentations (red).

The Logo of OnlyOffice in the different applications.

Why is there a switch from OnlyOffice to Open-Source-Version?

Behind OnlyOffice hides the Company Ascensio System SIA, which have there Headquaters in Riga (Latvia) and London (Great Britain). The Company however is russian. Because of that OnlyOffice falls under the sanctions imposed by Germany together with the EU against Russia. JGU is therefore discontinuing all business relations with OnlyOffice. With the free Open-Source-Version of OnlyOffice, no more money flows to Russia.

Differences and Similarities of both versions

OnlyOffice
(till May 29th)
Open-Source-Version of OnlyOffice
(as of the 29th May)
-the mobile editor for mobile devices (e.g. smartphones and tablets) is not supported
-Chargeable, thus falls under the sanctions imposed on Russia -Open source version, is freely available and free of charge, and is not subject to sanctions imposed on Russia
- In both versions you can edit and share documents together.
- All data and documents are located on servers of the university for both versions.
