MOGON II continues at the top of German supercomputers

09 July 2018: The supercomputer MOGON II in Mainz contnues to be listed at the top of the fastest high perfomance computers of German universities and among the 100 fastest supercomputers in the world.

Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) took two phases of the high performance computer MOGON II into operation in 2016 and 2017. MOGON II started into the list of the 500 fastest computers worldwide at position 65 in November 2017 with a processing power of two petaFLOPS or 2.000.000.000.000.000 floating point operations per second, and in June 2018 it still ranks within the 100 fastest computers of the world at position 87. This also means that the supercomputer in Mainz is still the fastest high performance computer of German universities. Within the list of the most energy efficient supercomputers MOGON II is listed at position 62 (in November 2017 at position 51). The name MOGON was chosen based on the latin name of the city of Mainz.

The state government of Rhineland-Palatinate, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and the Helmholtz Institute Mainz (HIM) together have invested 10.6 million Euro in total into the new high performance computer, in order to support scientists in Rhineland-Palatinate with international first-class computing power within the Alliance for High Performance Computing (AHRP) until 2020.
