Cleanup of the Apple accounts

In order to better support all Apple devices used for work at JGU in the future, we need to perform a one-time cleanup of the Apple accounts currently in use.

To clarify: Your Apple ID is the account you use to sign into Apple services such as App Store, iCloud and iMessage. It consists of email and the password that you use to sign in.

Currently, many JGU members already use Apple devices (e.g., iPhone, iPad) by logging in with their university email address.

Example: Sabine Mustermann logs in with her university email address sabine.mustermann@uni-mainz.de on her iPhone, which she either bought privately or was given by the university.

Unfortunately, we cannot integrate the Apple ID and email address used in the example into the university’s IT infrastructure. This is because even though the university email address is provided during registration, Apple treats it as a personal account.

Apple process for cleaning up current Apple accounts

Before we can start the integration, Apple will first clean up the currently existing personal accounts.

Example of a personal using the universitys email address: Sabine Mustermann logs in with her university email address sabine.mustermann@uni-mainz.de on her iPhone, which she either bought privately or was given by the university.

  • If you proceeded like Ms. Jane Doe in the example, you will receive an email from Apple within the next few days.
  • It will ask you to update your Apple ID.
  • Please follow the instructions and update your Apple ID by selecting a private email address.

If you do not receive an email from Apple in the next few days, you do not need to take further action.

Characteristics of the email from Apple

What happens next?

  • After you receive the email from Apple, you will have two months to update your email address.
  • At the end of the two months, the university will offer official JGU Apple IDs. We will send you more information about this via email.
